Old School Runescape, the antiquated model of Runescape that still looks and plays like the game I snapped innumerable hours into when I really should've been studying, is getting a raid. Its next raid, as it happens: The Theatre of Blood. A good raid needs good rewards, so when the Theatre of Blood was announced late last year, players were not able to see what clearing the multi-man challenge could earn them. Jagex responded with Justicar armor, a new best-in-slot armor place (above). There was one little problem: gamers absolutely hated it.
They memed onto it so tough that Jagex is now completely changing the armor's design. And not just that, the artist behind the Justicar armor,"Mod West," is utilizing designs submitted and voted on by players. Virtually all of Old School Runescape's upgrades go through participant polls, but that is the first time that the suit of armor has been forged in a fire of memes.
The irony is that while gamers hated the'closing' armor revealed earlier this year, they loved the prototypes revealed when the raid was declared. Initially, the Justicar armor was bulkier and part of a trio of new armor sets, West informs me, but as the Theatre of Blood went from vague concept to actual content, the armor changed with it. Participants said there was enough DPS gear but insufficient tank gear, so it had been narrowed down to only one armor collection. And if they were just going to use one group, Jagex figured they might as well create a new one based on the armor worn by the raid's huge bad.
"We believed changing it a little made sense," West says,"but players weren't quite on board with the original proposal we shared stream.
The memes came out hard and fast. Others thought the new armor did not look tanky enough and liberally provided some choices, with some calling for a more drastic redesign.
It got so bad that a few players began to seriously believe a meme that the updated armor was by another artist, which the artist who made the prototypes had left Jagex. But something amazing occurred. Even as memes blotted out sunlight, gradually but surely severe suggestions started to glow through. It began with primitive Photoshop tasks, but shortly appropriate illustrations and fan art began to crop up. Players rallied around the idea of a bulkier, blessed armor group inspired by the Runescape god Saradomin, so that they went back into West's prototype designs and made some adjustments.
